Artists' Statement
By training I am an engineer. Many would consider that to be an odd
beginning for and artist. For me, though, the grounding in process and
an affinity for how things fit together has allowed me to explore ceramics
from perhaps a different point of view. I take great pleasure in transforming
what I see in my mind's eye to a final form rendered in clay. As with
many artists, I am inspired by the world around me and by the insight
of those who have come before. I am educated and informed by this process
and armed with new ideas, I move on and try again. Eventually, and sometimes
with surprise, a form or vessel is created in which I take great pleasure.
My latest body of work was inspired by the stained glass and light screen
designs of Frank Lloyd Wright. Widely known as the most notable architect
of the 20th century. Wright developed an unprecedented expertise within
his limits of mostly straight lines. No one has surpassed his ability
when it comes to designing with straight lines, squares and rectangles.
To create something new, I have added design elements of my own to what
are obviously Wright elements and rendered these in two forms; tiles
and tile vessels. A stoneware clay body fired to Cone 5 after application
of deep green transparent glaze provides the medium of expression. I
hope you enjoy this work.
