Slow Bisque Firing Program for Thick Work
(Walls 1/2" and Over)

This program works very well for thick sculptural work and slightly damp work.
The long preheat will help evaporate remaining surface water from damp pieces. The first hold time of 8 Hours can be lengthened for still damp work. The shortest hold time recommended is 6 Hours. Remember that even if work feels totally dry there is still water in the clay that can turn to steam destroy pieces if it is heated to quickly.
The kiln lid should be propped during the initial 8 hour hold to allow moisture to escape. Trapping moisture in the kiln shortens element life and adds to corrosion of metal parts.
If a kiln vent such as the Skutt Envirovent or Orton Ventmaster is installed it should be turned on during the entire firing.
