Mason Stains About Mason Stains Mason Stains are calcined colorant oxide blends
used to give color to glazes, stains, overglazes, slips, engobes, porcelain
clays and other ceramic materials. Mason Stains are uniform colorants
produced to exacting standards and are processed in such a way that
they are much less toxic than the component oxides. Mason Stains give
true bright reproducible colors, are concentrated, are uniform at a
variety of temperature ranges and have little effect on the base glazes
performance, other than color. Mason stains are stable to around cone
5-6 and some will fire as high as cone 9. Best color response in some
Mason Stains is achieved in glazes with at least 15% calcium, and most
colors are brightest at low temperature. Mason publishes a color chart
which shows each stain in a glaze at an indicated concentration. The
use of the chart is often helpful in formulating glazes. All good glazes
require testing to provide satisfactory results. WARNING: WHILE MASON
