Ryan Clyde-Rich

Webster Groves, MO
Wheel Thrown and Altered Salt-Fired Stoneware

Ryan Clyde-Rich just finished his BFA in Ceramics at Webster University. Ryan creates functional pottery using stoneware clay decorated with geometric patterns. Every piece is handmade and no two pieces are exactly alike.

The firing technique Ryan uses was developed in Germany during the 15th century to produce functional pottery. The technique entails throwing handfulls of salt into the kiln when it has reached 2350degrees to create glossy orange flashing on the pieces. Working in this style is very labor intensive and requires careful preparation and painstaking control of the firing to be successful.
